New Tapes are easily found on Ebay. Look for the brands Ampex, TDK, Sony, Basf, Maxell or Memorex. Avoid buying tapes over 1800 ft, as they are longer and thinner and can damage motors. Remember that this machine accepts tapes up to 7" inches.
Metal tapes can also be found on Ebay. Type: Metal Take up reel and look for the brands AKAI, REALISTIC, MEISTER, SONY, PIONEER, TDK and others. Always appears excellent offers.

This unit find in perfect condition. CLEAN And LUBRICATED. Heads are demagnetized.

Many AKAI'S for sell do not have the "
CAPSTAN
SPEED SLEEVE
" - the chromed bolt that changes the speed and do not exist for sell separately!! ORIGINAL CAPSTAN AND NUT INCLUDED.
This model operates on two tape speeds: 7-1/2 ips and 3-3/4 ips. The Tape Speed is determined by the size of the capstan. For 3-3/4 ips, unscrew capstan cap by turning it counterclockwise and remove the outer capstan. For the 7-1/2 ips, use the outer capstan.
See the capstan in my pictures. It is located in the center of device close the pinch roller. (SEE PICTURE # 9)
The Audio board was completely cleaned and lubed with Deoxit D5 and all electrolytic capacitors, transistors and power supply capacitors  on audio/main board works great with no corrosion and no leaking. Everything still are original.
It is assumed that any bidder will understand how these reel to reel recorders operate and the characteristics of recorded tape both new and old. Questions are of course welcome and encouraged as this unit can be complicated to one that is not familiar with reel recorders/players.
This deck is 49+ years old and was stored for some time. Buying vintage equipment is not the same as going to Best Buy and buying a new Sony surround receiver. That being said keep this in mind when buying.

When we works on a tape deck, for instance, we does not simply test it in all modes for several minutes to make certain it works. WE ACTUALLY USES THE MACHINE FOR A WEEK, playing and recording many hours of tape, and actually uses the tape machines to record from AM/FM, CD or cassette to reel to reel tape, and if any glitches or abnormalities appear during this process they are addressed and corrected and the use of the machine continues until we are
absolutely certain that the machine is ready to be sold and will not deliver any unwanted surprises to its new owner. We will not release a machine for sale until he is absolutely certain it will perform flawlessly on a consistent day-to-day basis after it is shipped.
We have already sent hundreds of devices and never had any problem. All packages are shipped fully insured via UPS or USPS.
Also, we use only New Boxes and Styrofoam plates to protect the unit from any damage.
This is strictly a deck. It does not have speakers. You must connect it to a stereo receiver or an amplifier. This machine records and plays back with excellent fidelity and frequency response.
The Tape Recorder is looking great even if it has more than 49 years and it works perfectly!

AKAI 4000DS  - 1972
The 4000DS is the succesor of the 4000D and has an additional sound-on-sound function; hence the "S" behind the "D". It also has a tape selector switch. Although the heads remained the same, a higher frequency range was achieved again, probably by using silicon semi-conductors. Mounting the reels on the reel-tables still took place by means of rubber reel retainers (not original).
This famous Akai set has been in production for many years. It's also this model which can be found most in on line-auctions and second hand goods websites.
Auto shut off is  present in the power switch AND the motor will be turned off when the tension arm falls down.
This is an Akai 4000DS  reel-to-reel or open reel tape deck recorder and player (requires separate audio system) that I have fully serviced. It was manufactured in the seventies. The sound quality is equal to or better than a Teac and my experience tells me that Akai's are extremely reliable and long-lived machines. Beware of buying any deck that has not been professionally serviced. All the rubber parts have been replaced or rejuvenated, it has been thoroughly lubricated, I cleaned and demagnetized the entire tape path including the very nice condition heads, cleaned the audio recording controls and exhaustively tested all functions. Everything rates from very satisfactory to excellent condition. The nice wood-grain case has some  nicks. This is a very robust machine with excellent audio quality and have the original capstan speed change sleeve (this is a very expensive part). It is a single motor, 3 head (one micron) machine.
Highly rated in it's time and a definite workhorse and show piece is this Akai 4000 DS  reel to reel Deck. This unit has been extensively cleaned and tested and has proven over a week without fail. I have given you the most pictures allowed by E Bay to show you the luster and excellent condition of this unit. This reel to reel accepts up to 7" (seven inches in diameter) reels.  This unit features a One Micron gap recording head which increases frequency response. As you can see this unit's heads are in very good condition and have been well-maintained. As with so many vintage reel recorders, this is the area where it's crucial for proper playback/recording and in many cases is not achieved because of the poor condition of these heads.
There is an extra feature: Track selector that the unit can be switched from mono recording that allows a user to add/record another track to a previously recorded Mono track. (knob isn't original)
Back to the unit, this player/recorder has auto-shutoff when the take-up lever is employed and the on/off switch located in middle right is set to the Down Position labeled "Shut Off". (SEE PICTURE # 9)
It is very important that you maintain your heads and tape path after each side of playing or recording from older tapes. After a while, tapes tend to become brittle and the backing that holds the magnetic properties to the tape looses it's abilities and this will cause oxide to accumulate on everything the tape passes including the tape heads. When this happens, your sound quality will deteriorate. I have always found it a good practice to clean the entire tape path with denatured alcohol....with the power off after every playback or recording of each side of the tape. This unit only records/plays in One Direction and that is from left to right. There is no Auto-reverse. Where this simple yet integrated unit comes in very handy is by transferring all those mix tapes you may have had....or you dad had and you want to transfer them to CDR.
Another important note: If you are recording or playing back a old tape and it has a squealing/chattering sound....this means that the tape itself has exceeded it's life and could cause damage to the heads if you continue to use....the tape itself has dried out. If you come upon a tape of this character, remove it from the unit and clean the entire tape path as previously instructed. Any treatment of a tape in this condition and then played back on this unit could and probably will cause permanent damage to the heads. So Don't Do It as I will not accept returns for mishandling of this unit. It is best that you, if you decide to bid and win, to review the Owner's Manual as described or to contact me and I'll email it to you.
